Hotel Resort Empowers the Handicap in Zambia

In Zambia the Sun International owns a safari resort with a difference …and a good corporate citizen too! The resort is a 'combo' of two hotels ... just minutes from the Victoria Falls. A place of myth, mystery and all.

Sun International (SI) has just announced their continued commitment to help the needy. The hotel resort has introduced an out grower scheme for vulnerable people in selected areas of Livingstone. It's really the proverbial 'ploughing back' to the community they live in!

The out grower scheme will involve 29 families headed by blind or handicapped persons at the blind and handicapped settlements at Mapenzi and at Linda Township. The hotel resort will provide a guaranteed market for high value crops such as specialized vegetables, spices, garlic and herbs. Imagine real fresh vegetables on your table after a safari!

SI will provide finance and the technical assistance such as solar energy for pumping water. They will also provide requisites and the training on farming and the drip irrigation system.

This farming project is to be undertaken in collaboration with the International Development Enterprise (IDE) and the Co-operation League of the USA (CLUSA).

World Tourism Body Gives Zambia Top Ranking

The Zambian Tourism minister Patrick Kalifungwa has announced that the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) has ranked Zambia as Africa's number one emerging tourist destination. All Africa Report Hey…and that's another safari award… they never seen to end!

Sorry I digressed! ...The minister attributed this to the tourism sector that had developed tremendously in Zambia and the world tourism body had noticed the progress made. Developments like the meeting of South African travel agents in Livingstone in the second week of February, Air Tanzania's re- introduction of flights to Lusaka and a reduction in fares for local tourists by Zambian Airways all point to this phenomenon.

Mr Kalifungwa said the ministry had set a target of one million tourists by the year 2010 from the 610,00 visitors in 2004.

South African Travel Agents Reposition Zambia

Zambia Hosts African Coffee Safari

Visit Zambia campaign gets a boost!

A very highly represented second International African Fine Coffee conference and exhibition opened on March 2, 2005. The Zambezi Sun Hotel hosting this coffee safari conference is brandy new. It's one of the Sun International's hotel resort only four years old and built on the banks of the Zambezi River in Livingstone, Zambia.

Coming from all over the world the delegates are expected to discuss the professionalisation of small holder coffee producers. This will assist them improve their techniques and organisation skills. And behold... the delegates will be availed a chance to see Zambia's fairy tale… Zambia’s safaris and its friendly people.

Dr Robet Nsibirwa, executive director of Eastern Africa Fine Coffee Association believes Zambia deserves this honour to host the conference / exhibition. And we couldn’t agree more! A Coffee Safari Exhibition in Zambia

Consider a visit to Livingstone during the first weekend of March (3rd to 5th). Zambia is hosting the second Eastern African Fine Coffee Association (EAFCA) regional conference. Also happening at the same time is the second World’s Wildest Coffee conference.

Robert Nsibirwa, the executive director of EAFCA said the second African fine coffee conference will also be an exhibition. A safari exhibition for the finest coffees grown around this part of Africa!

The EAFCA organises the regional conferences. This one, which is the second regional conference and exhibition, brings together coffee buyers and producers to interact, develop business relationships, share knowledge and establish market links.

EAFCA is a member-driven association of specialty coffee producers, processors and marketers from 10 countries in the eastern and central African region. The countries are Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. Others are Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe

During the conference and exhibition the best two coffees from each country’s national competitions will be tested. An international panel will choose the highest scoring coffee. This will be presented to the Association for Specialty Coffee Industry Conference in Seattle Washington, USA in April 2005.

At this EAFCA and Wildest Coffee conference there'll be a meet the farm coffee safari in Mazabuka It’s really an open day coffee farm visit. Mazabuka is nicknamed the sweetest town in Zambia owing to its huge sugar plantation. Hey its Ilovo Sugar that owns the farm and the nearby sugar refinery.

For the first time Zambia Coffee Growers Association will present roasted coffee samples to the Trade Association for Specialty Coffee standards for submission for evaluation at the regions Taste of Harvest in Livingstone, Zambia .
